The Evolution of My Portrait Illustration Style

Behind-the-scenes, Custom portraitsLaura Knopp

Earlier this week, I was digging through my messy office supply closet and couple things happened…

  • I realized I have a ton unused sequins and feathers...such a waste! Perhaps I need to bedazzle a throw pillow or my husband’s khakis??

  • I found some of my old portrait illustrations and whoa baby I’ve come a long way in terms of my drawing technique and style.

So, in honor of it being throwback thursday, I’m sharing a couple of my old illustrations today.

Behind-the-Scenes: My Portrait Illustration Process

If you’ve seen seen any of my fun timelapse videos on Instagram or read this post, you may already have a general idea of how I illustrate portraits.

The short version: I take out my iPad and draw my heart out - there’s a lot of coffee and 90’s music involved while this happens.

The long(er) version: I have a process that’s been honed over time (AKA many late nights spent leaning over my desk until my drawing hand says “omggg stahppp it!”).
